Nowruz is the Iranian New Year which which begins with the first day of spring in the solar calculation of the number of days in a year. The Persian language word translates as “ new day.”

Nowruz is not related to Islam and it is partly rooted in the religious tradition of Zoroastrianism . However, though ancient in origin, the modern celebration of Nowruz has unique characteristics that have been molded in the Iranian experience.

Cultural celebrations and festivals are familiar to people all over the world. Often holidays like these bring together families and communities and introduce new generations to traditional music, food, dance, and handicrafts.

The most significant activity in the celebration of Nowruz is making the Haft-seen table. Persian people prepare a special table in their homes, where they place small dishes holding seven symbolic foods and spices. The names of these foods all start with the letter ‘s‘ in Persian and so the table is called the ‘seven s’ (haft-seen). about Sal Tahvil | The Exact Moment of the Nowruz New Year

The exact time when the new year begins is called “Sal tahvil”. When the New Year is just minutes away, families and friends with children together wait for Tahvil to occur. Right after the moment of Sal tahvil, the family exchanges well-wishes such as “Happy New Year” or “Sal-e No Mobarak!” in Persian. They kiss and hug each other and the new year begins accordingly.
